Traditional extraction techniques

pre-requisite: Chimera or Odorata

This class is not yet scheduled because it depends on the weather and seasonal conditions. It will take place in either April or May 2026, with the possibility of multiple dates depending on participant interest. Check back here for dates and we will announce on instagram as well.

This one-day course explores the deep history of perfumery’s oldest practices—drawing fragrance from the living world by hand through botanical study, hard-won experience and patience. Students will work directly with raw botanicals to learn traditional methods of distillation, enfleurage and tincturing, producing essences in class together. Alongside these hands-on techniques, we will consider the wider lineage of extraction: how ancient practices evolved into today’s technologies such as solvent and CO₂ methods and new biotechnological approaches.

While the emphasis rests on traditional craft, Extract also opens a conversation about the cultural, ecological, and spiritual dimensions of working with plants. Extraction is never a neutral act; it is always an encounter between human and other living beings. By grounding in the slower, more intimate practices, students will leave with not only technical skills but also a deeper sense of connection to the sources of scent and the responsibilities that come with transforming them.
