Where Odorata explores the raw poetry of natural oils, Chimera turns to the laboratory—those carefully crafted materials that have defined contemporary perfumery for over a century. Here we will meet the icons of the synthetic palette, from the airy expanses of aldehydes to the velvety warmth of musks, learning their histories, their roles in fragrance, and their sensorial personalities.
No prior knowledge is required—only curiosity. By the end of the day, you’ll have a grounding in the building blocks of contemporary perfumery, and a richer sense of how art and chemistry come together in scent.
An introduction to contemporary (aka synthetic) perfume materials

No prerequisites (beginners welcome)
In this hands-on class we will smell our way through the fascinating aromatic molecules that make up the perfumes we know and love today. Through a series of exercises we will explore the most important classic aroma materials, modern heavy hitters, and contemporary favourites, along with methods and tools used by perfumers. We will gain an introduction to blending these materials together through proximity, harmony and opposition to create our own beguiling perfume. In the process, We will delve into the language of perfume that includes contemporary fragrance typologies, families and notes.
Safety notes: Please be advised that we will be working with synthetic industry standard perfume materials, some of which are known allergens. If you have allergies to specific materials but would like to participate nonetheless, please let me know ahead of time and I will try my best to accommodate with alternative materials.
